What is Trigonometry?

Trigonometry studies the relations in Mathematics that include lengths, heights, and angles of several triangles. Trigonometry is concerning right-angled triangles, wherever one of the internal angles is 90°. It is a practice that helps us to work out missing side lengths or angles in a triangle. It plays an important role in many careers like engineering, design and architecture, and other fields.

Who first invented trigonometry?

Trigonometry in the modern sense originated with the Greeks. Hipparchus (c. 190–120 BCE) was the first to construct a table of values for a trigonometric function. He is known as the “Father of trigonometry.”

How were the six trigonometric functions named?

That’s a very complicated question to answer concisely and precisely. The naming of these trigonometric functions is dependant on many different variables, including the author’s preference for name lettering (e.g., “sine” is one possible transliteration from ancient Egyptian) and location or usage of the function in geometry, mathematics, medicine, music theory, etc. Roman numerals are another source for names; they emerged around 500 BC to denote ratios in music scales. One system used today which may be helpful is what Rodolfo Abetti called “the alphabetical order.”
